Good Job!  Hows the crank look, plated with gold likely, huh. lol  I would be afraid I'd have a heart attack if I tried cranking, I'd probable wait for some younger fellow to pass by, and beg for help............

It sure is looking good  Ian, Congrates.  Now, stay away from all those fires you guys are having. It looks pretty green where you are, must be a ways away from the worst fires. What do you all have for chrome shops down there?  We don't have very many of them here, or I haven't found them yet........... I need some done also.  Take care of you.

You mentioned your wheels needed to be re-spoked. But did not want to do it at this time?  If you clean up the spoke surfaces to get more clearance... I don't thing you could possible get up to a quarter inch of build up with primer and paint, and if you lean down the spokes you are going to change the distance between the drum and the backing plate.. leaving a way for more dirt, and whatever to get in with the brake shoes. I think my prior suggestion about the wheel cylinders would work no matter which set of wheels you put on the car. Looks to me like the alignment of the shoe and cylinder would not be a factor with that small of a change in the mating surfaces.

Just a thought Chet.  Your pictures did not show this but....

1. Do your brake shoes "Center" in wheel cylinder?  or does it really have to center?
2. Could you remove the Cylinders and machine down the back side enough to get the clearance you need for the brake drum?  This could work on front or rear drums.
3. Is it only the dust shield that is rubbing on the drum?
Polish off a bit of rubber at the rub point?

Cheapest route verse best route? ?

Just my thought without seeing the items.

Steve, You did not mention if your car was changed to a down draft, or is it the updraft system.  I have a book that lists all carbs (I think all) from 1903 till 1950, all models of cars that used them. I do not find a  Stromberg  with the VRO- 1. All listed start with A, B, or E as the first letter in the type carb it is.  Do you have a part number? My book lists by part number also, if we can determine your carb fits in my book, Then I have tuneup guide for those carbs. My book lists Plymouths as having only Carter, from PJ thru the 1942 model, which I think are all down draft carbs. I know the 28 and 29s are updraft thou.

Hey Chet, Still working on the ole girl hey?  What is original on the 29U? My 29 Coupe has the 20" wheels...   I notice the brake drums on mine are pretty squared, looking along the brake shoe surface to the surface that bolts to the wood spokes.  Maybe the Brake shoe surface on mine is a bit wider than the one you show a picture of. Maybe the brake cylinder is a bit too large?   ???

Hi Chet, I was making plans on coming to Hershey this year. I forgot (I am getting that way more and more) about a local celebration that I am a part of, they changed dates on me. lol  Hope to make it next year.

Reference SD weather.......... and antifreeze. My take anyhow.  I have never checked to see what percentages I am using. I always (only) ADD enough antifreeze to bring the freeze point down to -32 degree.  I have had no heating problems yet. Surprisingly, My radiator was leaking when I got the car 3-4 years ago, I took it to the radiator shop and they refused to fix it, said it was to far gone.  I put in a bottle of Barrs leak stop and have been driving it since with no leakage. I am keeping my fingers crossed thou, and watch it pretty close. lol   Rusty, we (the POC -Lewis and Clark chapter) have a meeting on the 28th of July, at Canton SD, there is also a good sized car show there the same day. Would you like to ride on down with me and see what we are doing? I expect to see a few of the members cars there. Maybe even my 39.

I have re-built too many engines to count, with rope seals and have never had one leak.. I always leave the rope a 1/4 inch long on each end, top and bottom, kinda push this 1/4 inch back into the cavity without really packing it hard, then tork the main cap to specs. I even put the rope seals in without pulling the engine or crankshaft. We had an item we call a "Chinese finger lock". It is made of stainless steel with a cable long enough to feed through, over the crank shaft, then put one end of the seal in the Chinese finger thing and pull the seal through. Works real good, and I bet you can still get one at most parts stores.
I would trust the rope seal more than the neoprene type.  I never worried about packing the seal more than just the normal installation in the cavity. To every man his own thou. lol  Good luck.

They will be hanging out for the next edition by now.

If you are behind, don't feel bad, you are really not behind.... just down under. lol .  I live only a couple hundred miles from the printer and I received mine last week.  It is good reading, I really enjoyed it also.  Sure has been quiet for the last month or so, maybe pickup when spring gets here. ( I am still waiting for spring, maybe tomorrow)

Kim, Things are looking good. Congrates. We had a nice trip home from Tucson also, we hit a dirt storm also, not as bad as the one you got in, but it was hard to see for a while.  We followed "Old Route 66" for quite a ways Then we hit a snow storm again,  from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins where they closed the highway. lol  We still made it home. lol And it is good to be home.  We met a lot of real nice people at Tucson and I will sure remember that trip for a long time. Hope we meet up again one of these days.  I had the 29 out for a cruise Monday, and had a new Exhaust System installed, coming home the cab filled with smoke and smoke coming out from under the hood, the wire from the Generator burned up. The cutout shorted out.  They don't make a cutout anymore that even looks like an original, and those are in the $100 dollar range, so I am still working that one out, I may have to see if I can fix the short in this one. lol

Jim, Steve.  I had the same fit problem as Jim had, the distributor does not work hanging down. lol .  The 28Q is opposite from the 29U. I did get an original from Merrill Berkhiemer. I replaced the one I had built for the "New" one, now I trust the ole Plymouth to travel A bit farther from home. lol  Good luck.

You are doing great Tony. I used to watch my Dad use the guide wheel stripper, I have never tried it myself. Is it pretty easy to use? My Dad was a professional body and paint man, one of the best around in the 50's and 60's, they used a lot of "leading" back then also, hardly ever see that anymore. Did you learn some of your skills from your parent? You are pretty good yourself.

Hi Frank and Kim, You have a handle on the Top thing.  I would be totally lost about now. Sure glad it is not me. lol  I still can not get the 39 out of the snow bank. I reckon I will take the Mustang Convertible down to Tucson. It probable will mean a couple days off my drive time. lol  You are right Frank, that is the first time in 30 some years that the 39 has been left out in the weather, I have an enclosed trailer for the 29, at least that one is well taken care of. My garage was to busy this winter, even my new pickup had to set out side. Next winter it will be inside the garage, you betcha.
