General Discussion / Re: 29 Build Thread

Since the board has been so quite I will post another update.  The cold weather that has rolled into the neighborhood has put the brakes on my wood working project.  See the link below for my progress to date.

Passenger Sill and Rear Cross Sill

New Hinge Pillar Installation

This will be my last update for a while.  Everything I have done to date to the driver's side of my car I will be reversing and doing to the passenger side.  Since the methods are the same I don't see any reason to post the blow by blow description.  Will start posting again once I reach a point of new work.  Please see the link below.., just to much to post in this thread.

think you should check this with your frt seat back bolted in place as it pulls the door pillars together....

I don't need the floor dimension I need the roof dimension as the picture shows.

Tks,  Chet...

General Discussion / Really need some dimensional help

Could use another check measurement Please:

Since the roof of my car is off and probably wasn't correct anyway, I would like to install a strip of wood across the top to hold the door frames in their proper position before I tighten down the door pillars.   What I need is:

The distance between the rear doors.  See picture below:
29U 4 door Sedan

Many Thanks,  Chet...

I do not like to drive it on busy streets or the highway anymore. It will go 55 (given a little time) but I prefer 35-45. Saturday morning is a good time to drive around here (Huntsville, Alabam). I guess most sleep in, except for the fishermen and hunters.

I no longer drive at night either, if possible, and avoid rainy days too.

Regarding the three LED tail lights, I want to be sure I am seen. Lots of distracted drivers out there, texting and eating, etc.

John,

I agree.  I was just curious about the seat belts because I think some states require them if you are going to register the car with regular plates.  In my rant I was speaking about driving my 48 Plymouth.  I've been on the NJ Turnpike with the 48 and have experience a couple of nail biting moments.  The extra break light is always a good idea especially in traffic.

I thought someone on this forum had one of these.  I hear you about the drafts.  The entire body on my car was held in place by 4 out of 16 possible bolt down points.  The only window that actually rolled up and down without assistance was the passenger side because I replaced the glass and fixed the channels a number of years ago.  I guess after 88 years and an unknown number of owners I'm lucky anything survived.  Do you live in a cold area.  I can't believe it is February and we are having repetitive 60+ degree weather here in the southern northeast. (Southern Delaware State)  High 55 today then we warm back up to the middle 60's for the weekend.  ??  If this keeps up I might even finish my car sooner than later.

Best Regards, Chet...

What wood working tools did you use?

Rusty,

Nothing fancy, also standard hand operated power tools, jig saw, router, and a drill press not shown below.

Hi John,

Were you required to put in seat belts by the state or was that a personal choice ?  Some folks give you a break when on the road with a classic car, yet others just don't understand that stopping can be a real challenge without the comfort of antilock brakes.  I really have a problem when I am doing 55 in the right lane and keeping the required 1950 distance from the car in front of me then some wise guy jumps in between and then slams on his brakes. $@$%@$%$#@$@ Many expletives and hand singles follow.

I wonder how the algorithms for self driving cars will respond to a 48 or 29 Plymouth on the road.  Oh well we can always rely on the hand singles.

Cheers Chet...

UPDATE:

Old Man's words of wisdom are exactly correct.  I am trying to stay as close as possible to the original construction of the Plymouth frame but have to work with the tools and information I have at hand.   Obviously working without formal templates, drawings, or special tools; I try to construct as close as possible to the engineering intent and not the exact construction methods used in the period the car was built.

As I peel back the onion on this car the task is as daunting as ever but we are taking it one step at a time.  Hopefully the end product will be worth it.  As the Old Man said what you can't see is between us...

See the link below for the update just to much to post directly:

Thank you all for the kind words.  Your interest keeps me focused and honest.

John,  If someone could benefit from what I am doing that would be great. I know I have learned a lot from what others have done.

Old Man,  Nice to hear from you its been awhile.  You always bring a different perspective to any discussion.  I am sure whatever you are working on is coming out just fine.  I sometimes complain about the work that the last guy who owned my car did;  but in reality if all its previous owners left it to rust my old car wouldn't exist.  So hopefully many years from now when someone else works on this car maybe the new owner might express a few kind words about the old guy in 2017 that did the restoration work.  That would be really cool because in 2117 they might be retrofitting the old Plymouth with a new electric power plant that looks like the old 4 banger.  Probably be powered by a laptop battery.  Oh well that's a stretch.

John,

I am totally not sure at this point.  I know the 1928 had different caps so we can rule them out.  I seem to have 4 of each of the caps you are talking about.  The four without the octagon were originally on my car and the four with the octagon came from a purchase of 19" wheels from a 30U.  I also have 4 of the new style 30U caps.

I am totally confused at this point.  I know Walter P used items to depletion.  My 29U was manufactured early in 1929 probably no later than March so the round hubs might be correct for my car ???  Will take a peek at the production numbers ??

Another mystery ?  Chet...
