December 13, 2020, 02:33:08 PM
As of yesterday I finished the work to the front end.  Restoration officially finished.

  • King Pins replaced
  • Front wheel Bearings and Races
    Inner Bearing:           Napa - BR14130
Inner Bearing Race:   Napa - BR14274
    Outer Bearing:           Napa - BR09074
Outer Bearing Race:   Napa - BR09194
  • Dust seal: CR 18242 from Northeast Parts  (northeastparts.com)
  • New front brake shoes
  • New drum on driver's side. (NOS)

Car drove nice. No wheel bangs or scrapes.  The front end was tight and responsive.  The Vacuum Fuel pump is still working without issue after 4 hours of total run time.   Drove 30 continues miles at an average speed of 30 mph.   Idle oil pressure 20-25psi  max run 35-40 psi.  Motor meter engine temperature cool.  62 degree day.  Engine break-in runtime 16.3 Hours.  Total driven miles 91.1 (car speedo)

General Discussion / 29U - King Pins
November 10, 2020, 11:08:23 AM
It appears that the knock in my passenger side front wheel is related to the bottom bushing of the king pin.  There is a good amount of play and I can physically move the wheel back & forth and create the knock.  I guess cleaning off the protective years of grease and grime helped bring out the problem.  So I guess I will need to replace the king pin set and while I'm at it, replace the inner and outer wheel bearings. Oh yes probably should install the new brake pads I have for the front.  I guess when I was in this area I should have been more aggressive with repair.  Well I have all winter to find the parts and do the work.

Unfortunately I have never replaced king pins before and could use some advise.  I don't think it's difficult but I don't have any experience.

To remove the Pivot Pin lock pin, Does it just hammer out or is there a set screw.
Also which direction, see picture below:

Any words of wisdom from them that have been there and done that, would be appreciated, Chet...

The wife & I went out for a drive in the 29 this morning.  Drove 20 miles around the neighborhood.  The car & I are getting use to each other again.  I am learning to drive straight cut gears all over again and it's not always pretty.  Plenty of rattles and groans but for the most part the car ran well.  The motor ran very cool and oil pressure was 20-25 at idle and 40psi at run.  The car still likes 30/35 mph to cruise the back country roads.  Lots of vibrations I need to investigate.  The worst seems to be the gravel pan on the drivers side.  I will install the correct running boards over the winter so that should eliminate the vibrations from the side kick panels and my home made running boards.  Didn't use any side mount hardware because I knew I would be replacing them.  I would like to get 100+ miles on the car before the first snow.  Total to date is 42.4.

Not going far until I have confidence in the vacuum fuel pump.  It over filled after 5 hours of idle run.  Apparently driving uses more gas than sitting idle and running on the driveway.   This makes sense so I hope no problems arise with the vacuum pump.  So far so good and the increase in gas usage while driving is a good sign that this should work out fine.  Fingers crossed.

General Discussion / Wheel Maintenance
October 23, 2020, 04:29:27 PM
I was having problems with front wheel knock so I jacked up the front end and checked the wheels.  I couldn't find any loose wood spokes but they certainly looked dry.  After greasing the steering components again I socked the wood spokes the best I could with a spray bottle, both front and back. I let them dry turning the wheels from time to time to allow the water to pernitrate around the spoke and rim.  I took the car out today for a short drive and my knocking sound was gone.  I spoke with a friend and he said that I should put one coat of a 50% mixture of boiled linseed oil and turpentine to swell the wood.  Has anybody heard of this maintenance tip. ??  I have in the past sprayed the wheels during hot dry summer conditions but have not heard of using boiled linseed oil.  I guess the assumption is that the oil doesn't dry up as quickly as water.

We loaded up the 29 and set out for the DMV inspection station in Georgetown.

We off loaded the car and drove over to the inspection line.  I was frantic about the paint color change, should have brought the painting receipt.  I worried about pretty much everything you can think of until we pulled into the inspection bay.  First stop on the brake machine and passed.  Then all the inspectors had to come by to check her out.  Mostly concerned with three basic things.  Lights, windshield wiper, and vin number.   We passed with flying colors, no problems.

After we got home we started out on a test drive but had to turn around because of a scraping sound coming from the front passenger side wheel.  Quick check found a loose wheel bearing probably needs replacement over the winter but I tightened it up and we will try again tomorrow.

I guess we are back into maintenance mode.   Chet...

Anyone have a picture of what the rear roof trim looks like or how it was handled on your 28,29,or 1930 sedan restoration ?

General Discussion / 29 Sedan Foot Rest
July 17, 2020, 02:39:39 PM
Can anyone post a picture of where the foot rest mounts.  It's been a long time since I removed it and I don't think it was installed correctly in the first place.

Thanks in advance,  Chet...

General Discussion / Trouble in Paradise

Well after 6 hours of engine runtime (over 6 months) the Vacuum fuel pump overflowed.  Could this be because I have been idling fast and low speed without being under load where there might be more gas usage per rpm. ??  Don't know just asking.

Once the pump filled to the brim it starved the carb for gasoline.  My assumption is that it could no longer gravity feed the gas to the carb with both chambers filled.  At this point no gas in the oil.

Anyone have any experience with an issue like this.

Chet...

PS... Gas cap vented so the issue isn't from expansion of the fuel in the gas tank.

General Discussion / Help with Interior Details
May 15, 2020, 11:55:50 AM
Since I know for sure my interior was redone awhile back and the other work that was done to the car was less than accurate I have a few questions about the interior of a 4 dr. sedan.

  • How were the rear wheel wells handled.
  • Were there arm rests to off set the wheel wells.
  • Was there any wind lace surrounding the door openings.
  • I know the front passenger door had a map pouch.
  • I know the front floor was rubber mat and the rear floor was carpet.
  • I have the rear foot rest.
  • What details am I missing ?
Any info would be appreciated,  Chet...

I started to clean up and repair my rear passenger seat back.

I knew he seats were old but it seems that someone upholstered over what I believe to be the original leatherette.
Check out the remains of this 91 year old seat back.
The leatherette is literally petrified.  Hard as a rock.

I just found this very interesting.  I know, a little bit crazy.
These days you need to take joy.., where you can find it.

General Discussion / Door Handles
May 11, 2020, 02:11:37 PM
I got my door/window handles today.  They look great but I have a question.

I think the pin hole for the door release handles is drilled in the wrong spot.  I thought it was inline with the handle not 90 degrees off center ?
see picture:

Other than that they look great:

Any Comments ?

General Discussion / Some Help please:

Help,

I tried to install the hood on my car and I thought there was something that fit into these two holes.  I went back over my pictures and didn't see anything.  Also I don't remember taking anything off the hood but I could swear that there was something that fit into these holes to locate the rear portion of the hood ??

If so please post a picture so I know what I am looking for ??  If anyone has a spare.., I'm interested.
