General Discussion / Another Decision
October 19, 2019, 12:40:16 PM
I have a Kingston Vacuum Fuel pump which is in need of repair to fix leaks from small holes in the bottom of the tank.  Since I have yet to get this working I am not sure what other problems I might find.  Prior to the rebuild, my engine was hooked up via an electric fuel pump using the Kingston pump for esthetic purposes only.

I also have a Steward Warner Vacuum Pump Model 210.  Definitely available at the time and far superior to the rather inexpensive Kingston Pump.  It also provides regulation and check valves to ensure problem free operation.

See pdf's below for info on the SW Model 210 - Which I am not sure if it will work properly with the metered vacuum from the oil pump assembly.  Normally it is hooked up to the intake system vacuum.

Anyone have any experience with the SW-210

WHAT TO DO:

1 - Kingston with electric fuel pump.
2 - Rebuild Kingston and try to get it to work.
3 - Use the SW Model 210 with check valve to ensure no gas in the oil system.

General Discussion / Your Opinion Needed
October 03, 2019, 02:44:25 PM
OK.., I have a couple of days to decide whether to paint this item that the Chrome Shop chromed.  I think it looks neat and should look great on the car.  I also have been told that this area should be body color but the hood bracket (not pictured below) should be chromed.  It doesn't make much logical sense to me but I believe the powers to be are correct.

Just a quick poll on what you guys may think.

General Discussion / Big Progress

After 3 years I have finally rounded second base and heading for third.  I picked up the Fenders and trim parts from the painter today and will deliver the body tomorrow.  I still haven't made a final decision on the color but it will be Blue with vermillion pin stripping.  Will be doing assembly for the last time shortly.

I plan to drive up one of the days, don't know which one (weather dependent).  Wanted to talk to one of the venders that make running boards.

Tom do you plan to spend any time there this year ?

Anyone else attending ?

Please advise,  Chet...

General Discussion / Windshield Molding Question
September 05, 2019, 10:25:50 AM
I am not sure if the exterior mounting hole on the windshield trim is correct or not.  I assume that the mounting nails and any screws would be under the black rubber window trim.  I was going to repair these exterior holes until I noticed metal backing which might mean they were suppose to be there. Please advise ??

General Discussion / Check this out.

I completed the bodywork to the passenger side fender and removed the driver's side for repair and prep for paint.  While cleaning the upper frame under the fender I noticed that my front brake tubing connector was cracked.  I still have the original copper and had repaired the brakes a number of years ago.  I guess I'll have to replace this line.  In inspecting the passenger side I found that the connector was also cracked.  Neither line was causing a problem and neither could be seen without removing the fenders and looking straight down at the fitting.

I guess a complete brake system refurb is in the cards.  Can't seem to catch a break, no pun intended.  :(

General Discussion / Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer
August 05, 2019, 09:04:38 AM
Hello All,

The board has been so quiet I thought I would break the silence.   I have been involved in many unrelated summer activities which has my car project stalled for the present.  Also I must admit that body work and paint prep isn't my favorite activity.  So once I run out of excuses or other projects I will have to get busy again.

I hope everyone else is enjoying our hot and rainy summer.  At least that seems to be the weather we are experiencing around here.   Sometimes it feels more like Florida than Delaware with temps in the 90s and possible thunder storms in the late afternoon.

So just checking in to let you know that we are alive and well and feeling guilty about procrastinating but we are retired so procrastination is a main stay.

Cheers Chet...

General Discussion / Parts Help
June 10, 2019, 05:21:05 PM
Below is a picture of what is left of the center hood guide which is attached to the fender flat.  I am in the process of repairing these pieces and this one is an easy fabrication but I would like to know what was originally attached to it.  I assume some type of rubber stop ??

Anyone have a picture of what this should look like with all it's parts.

Tks,  Chet...

General Discussion / Help with Paint - 29U
June 10, 2019, 10:31:47 AM
At this point I haven't decided what color or combinations of color that I want to paint.  Obviously red isn't one of them.  What's more important is I need to understand what gets painted and what doesn't especially with the fine details of a combination color scheme.

I don't want to make an expensive mistake like chroming bumper parts that should have been painted Black.  So here is my present understanding for your combined critique.  Looking for true to original as a discussion point.

All 4 Door 1929 Cars:

  • Wheel fenders, center door pillars, door frames, and dash - BLACK
My assumption is the front fender screws are chrome plated and not painted.  I believe the fenders were painted prior to installing on the car during manufacture.
  • Body, wheel rims and wood, - PRIMARY BODY COLOR   ( Wheel Hubs ?? )
  • All raised body trim areas - SECONDARY COLOR
Pictures showing unique details would be appreciated.

Suggestions on paint would also be helpful.

Tks Chet...

General Discussion / Quiet Board / Spring chores
May 07, 2019, 12:03:14 PM
Everything comes alive in the spring including work and projects.  The garden absorbs a large chunk of time especially with the level of rain we have been getting.  Cutting the grass twice a week here is becoming par for the course.

I haven't settled into a good car project week yet, but I have been able to keep focused on breaking in the engine.  I hope to redo the valve adjustment this week.  It has loosened up a bite since startup, cam transition tap until the engine gets hot.   Will install the newly rebuilt RT-08 carb now that it seems the engine is running OK.

Chipping away a tiny bit at a time,  Chet...

Hopefully things are going well for everyone else.  Fingers crossed.

General Discussion / The Prodigal Son returns.
April 05, 2019, 01:32:19 PM
Snapped some pictures in a rest area on my way back from Massachusetts.

Might get to install this over the weekend.  It looks like 2 days of reasonable weather.

Hopefully all is correct and finally set for another 90 years of service, that is, if gasoline is still available 90 years from now.

General Discussion / What’s happening?
March 08, 2019, 09:46:45 AM

Very quiet board.  I know the weather has been a negative factor in getting things on the car to-do-list accomplished, but just checking in anyway.   At this point in my project I am doing cosmetic body work and the cold weather has ruled out any major accomplishments.   I fear that the warm weather will bring a tsunami of work to be dealt with all at one time.  Oh well I could benefit from losing a few pounds.   Waiting for spring.

General Discussion / Looking for Guidance
January 06, 2019, 09:32:05 AM
My car has seen many repairs and restoration attempts over its long history.  So I am always questioning whether items or construction was original, true to original, or not even close.  Since I have finished the wood framing I have been slowly working on the body work in preparation for the paint shop.  My driver's side front fender had a lot of small holes left from poor body filler repairs.  Metal patches need to be welded to the underside of the fender.  Since I am not an expert welder I decided to remove the fender rather then trying to weld thin steel against gravity.

Here is my Question:

There are 5 screws holding the fender to the car frame.  Is the picture below representative of how the fender was originally attached or were these screws carriage bolts ?  I had to drill one of these out and the screw and eyelet were brass ?  The square back bolts appear to be original. Does this look and sound correct ??

See picture below of what I have on my car.

General Discussion / My Motor Update
October 29, 2018, 02:16:51 PM
It appears that engine oil was the problem with my engine.  Builder is going to redo the bearings.  I hope they also clean out the oil ports.  Just in case of debris.

Tom, I think you posted is diagram of the oil system But I can't seem to find it.

Note from the builder:

Chet:
Pulled apart your motor the other day and 2 of the rods are badly damaged.  Definitely a lack of oil which caused the heat buildup and then the babbitt just grabs and tears.  The oil piping may not have been totally primed when it started thus causing the damage.  Will get going on the re-babbitting of the rods.
Will be in touch.
