I received an email from a gentleman named Bill Schultz who stated the following:

Hi Chet,

My name is Bill Schultz and I was referred to you by a couple gentlemen on the AACA site.  I am on the Vehicle Selection Committee for the Eyes On Design concours car show held at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford Estate in metro Detroit, and we have a featured class this year which centers on Working class cars of 1928.  This is a very cool group of cars that represent basic cars that average folks would have purchased, versus the other pre war classes which feature more hi end cars.  We are looking for a very very nice '28 Plymouth for this class and I was hoping you could help us locate a nice car, someone willing to come to our area and participate in this neat event.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the info on this event:

The Eyes On Design concours car show held at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford Estate can be researched and viewed at www.eyesondesigncarshow.com.  As mentioned, we are in need of a '28 Plymouth for a special class that is going to concentrate on basic working class cars of 1928, originally priced between $500-900.  This is a very cool event and attracts a lot of media attention as well as usually having many of the auto industries top designers and engineers in attendance.  The coolest part for most of the participants in this class is that they are displayed with "like" automobiles rather than be next to a host of huge Packards and Pierce Arrows!  Whoever comes will have a great time at a very scenic and historical site.

I DO NOT KNOW HIM PERSONALLY but the event sounds great !  :D

Hi racertb,

I agree with the Old Man.  I have my cars set at a reasonable value with a 500 deductible I think I pay as much for both my cars as you are paying for one.   The agreed upon values are fair but of course not what I think the cars are worth but worth what I have invested in them to restore.  Enough to cover my investment without the insurance bleeding me dry.  Liability is cheap and worth the upgrade to protect your home and assets.  I'm more worried about that then loss.

Just my 2.5 cents,

Chet...

As an FYI, I use Grundy and haven't had any issues but I haven't had any claims.  When you have a claim that's when the rubber meets the road.  To date I haven't heard anything negative about either.  I would suspect you wouldn't last long in the Antique car insurance area with a bad reputation.  I went with Grundy because they are kind of local to me and I figured they weren't as prestigious as Hagerty so maybe they would appreciate my business more.

So all I can say is they are very easy to work with, establish a replacement value, and give money to.  I hope if I ever have a claim that it will go as easy as my payments.  When I inquired about driving.., the agent for Hagerty said no Sunday driving.  The only driving allowed was to a bona-fide car show event.  Grundy was more liberal with the use of the car as long as I didn't use it for everyday driving activities.  Test drives were OK, no distance requirements.  Driving the car cross country for a car show was also OK with them.  You just can't drive it everyday to work, school, or the store etc.  Which BTW is the same as my Antique Car Tag limitations.

My 2.5 cents,  Chet...

General Discussion / Re: 8 Volt (contd)

Steve,

In the previous thread you stated that:

"Here's an update. I received the 8 volt Battery Tender and charged to the correct level. The car fired right up."

Were you having issues starting the car.  If you had to charge the battery to get a good start I would think you might not be getting enough charge ??? Maybe the generator is not pushing enough current ?  Please explain.  You mention that the windings are blue, did the generator ever smoke ?

Chet...

PS...   If you click on "Profile" than in the Modify Profile area click on "Look & Layout Preferences" check the box that states: "Show most recent posts on top."  Then you will not have to go to the bottom of the thread to see the most recent activity.  It will show in the reverse order with the new post first.

Hi Old Man,

I know it is eaiser to do then explain.  The information presented in this post has been very interesting.  I have just one question.  When you refer to the spring perch are you adjusting the tension of the spring to creat a different cutout based on the desired voltage which would equate to the strength of the cutout coils magnetic pull.

I am not sure if this statement makes sense and maybe I am not understanding the proceedure but I think I do and maybe I am not explaining it correctly.  What do you use as the cutout voltage and where are you measuring it ?

I am currently using an alternator but I have the old generator and would like to give it a go.  Sorry Steve for short stopping your post.

Tks Chet...

"selling stuff on e-bay for next years gas money"! By the look of the infrastructure at chezchet you are yanking our chain? lolo

I am a firm believer in the old expression "If you watch the pennies the dollars will take care of themselves".

Seriously, Yes we have been blessed and yes eBay & Craig's list are great sources for tax free income.  I always liked the mail order business model.  Very low overhead.   :)

Thanks Tony,

I hope to finish all the remaining details in the spring.  Lots of moldings to install with some fine tweaking.  That car pretty much sums up my last 10 years of weekends not counting some honey & daughter do's.

hopefully next spring I can start on my 29.  This one should go faster since I plan to retire from my day job.  Car meets spring and fall, boating & fishing in the hot summer months, and in the winter selling stuff on eBay for next years gas money.

Cheers, Chet...

Dave thanks for clearing things up.  Tractor Supply is one of my favorite stores but I never noticed the 8 vdc battery, probably because I usually get my batteries from Napa.

Every day is a learning experience,  Cheers...

Steve,

I have not heard of an 8vdc car battery but of course that doesn't mean anything.  My knowledge of electronics tells me that this was probably the standard 6 vdc system and the 8 volt battery gave the starter a little more oomph!  Actually using 8 volts would give you brighter lights with less current draw and a better start.   I would think the generator was tweaked a little to produce an 8vdc charge.

How recent was it purchased.   Maybe it's a gell cell battery in your 6 volt system. Ian is correct about an 8 volt max charge rate.  If you measured the voltage while the car was running it might just be the generator producing the 8 vdc.  After all a 12 vdc system charges at around 13.5 volts.

My 2.5 cents,  Chet...

Hi Tony,

Are you going to keep us up to date on the restoration of the 34.  If you want you could start a "1934 Dodge Restoration" build thread.  Then the rest of us can go to one place to see your current and past progress.

Frank,

My assumption is that this wasn't a stock car but the antics were real.  I like the guy with his hand out the window trying to push the car away from the ditch.  That would be me, just plain stupid to think you can push the car to keep it upright.., but then somebody had to try it in order to figure out that it wasn't a good idea.

Not much in the way of special effects, in the 20's you were really a stunt driver.

General Discussion / Cool Video showing our era cars !!!

This is worth a view, pay no attention to the pop up ad.  This is an official Dodge Brothers promotional film.  I grabbed the link from another forum.

Would you do this to your old car ?

Just close the promo ad and enjoy the film.
