General Discussion / tie rod ends
August 16, 2008, 02:36:59 PM
My 30u tie rod ends will not accept grease, can they be repaired?  thanks, jim

My 30u carb leaked due to the needle valve not stopping the fuel flow.  I think.  I finally had a carb shop rebuild it and replace the needle and seat.  My 30 still runs rough, how much difference will a thermastat make.  jim

it was the drain hole that stopped my '37P4.  I had "adjusted" the brake pedal.  jim

Thanks Chet for all that info.  The spring  that confused me did not belong and must have been left hanging by a previous repair.  The extra spring  sure is similar to the 37p4 which I remember cuz it was hard to get hooked in place after the transmission was installed.

Next week I'll look for the pilot, which is a must, and the throw out which is an almost must.

This is one on me!  The 30U had a return spring connected to the throw-out yoke.  It never dawned on me it didn't belong in there.  It looks to be the same as in my 37.  Thanks, again Chet.

By the way, where did you get the pilot bushing and throwout bearing.  jim

thanks Chet.

The flywheel will go to the shop in the next day or two with the clutch plate and disc.  As long as I'm here I may try to replace the rear main seal.  Also I can't find what the throw-out bearing return spring hooks to on the transmission?  The throw-out bearing was  throwing grease so you are right on it too

My 30U has a deep grove in the flywheel from some past clutch disc .  the current disc has lots of material.  Should or can  the flywheel be resurfaced?  It also suffers from a bad pilot bearing and pressure plate.   all advise is welcome, thanks, jim

General Discussion / Re: serial number

My engine number is there behind the left front wheel, thanks.  Actually it was easy to see once I knew where to look.  That picture was very nice.

thanks, jim

Thanks, the car is registered by the engine number and the CHP confirmed that is the standard number to use. There are holes on the rightside  door post where a plate could have been.  It is a coupe with an oval rear window but the 4318 seems to mean an early body?  I'll check the frame but removing the fender may be more than my curiosity can afford.
thanks, jim

General Discussion / serial number

My 30U has the engine number U237191 and body number 383-4318 but no serial number on the door post.  Can these two existing numbers be used to find out about the car?

Thanks, Jim

General Discussion / Re: 30U rear main oil seal
March 13, 2008, 08:12:02 PM
Thanks Chet and John.  Its not too far from running again and then we shall see what the rear main is doing or not.  I replaced the rear seals and the transmission seal and the wiring harness is about finished.  I'd sure like to drive it for a while now.

regards. jim

thanks Chet, I'll take a look at Tod's site.  Years ago my brother replaced a rear seal unsuccessfully and I spoke with a auto mechanic recently that doubted it would be a good idea.  Since I don't know the condition of the engine I'm tending towards waiting, there may be more to do anyway.   By the way, I've been following your running board progress and I think the idea is to enjoy the machine.  My 30u will have a ford right side tail liight until I come across a plymouth light.  They look very similar and I'm a real believer in signal lights.  Thanks for the great site.  Jim,

General Discussion / 30U rear main oil seal
February 18, 2008, 11:18:33 PM
Can the rear main oil seal be replaced with engine in car?  If so is it worth doing?
i just replaced the pinion seal and found the transmission needs a seal so why not go on to the engine.
Thanks for the past and future help.  Jim

Does the 30U have a rear end vent and if so where would it be?   Thanks, Jim
