Yes it attaches to the two small holes on the firewall near the Vacuum fuel pump.

Can't help with any modern replacement clutch discs or throw out bearings. Will continue to try. At swap meets, with the list of interchangeable clutch disc supplied, may find a disc with one of the other cars listed.

I understand.., thanks for posting the interchange info.

It was nice to see the 28Q on TV.  I got a chuckle when they pointed out the broken horn button but that's all they did with that.  As most on this site know this is not an easy fix.  Not to mention the light switch & throttle tubes.

Doors didn't close right.., Most likely because the wood framing was shot.  They said that they did fix the brakes but when one of the crew said "good thing the wood wheels are OK, that would be 10K to replace. "  I'm glad I didn't use these guys for any of my restoration efforts.  I will say the car had a nice paint job.

BTW...   Motor Trend cable channel, "Restoration Garage" [ season 7 episode 7 ] enjoy :)

Thanks for posting this information.  A couple of questions:

  • Does any of this point to a possible modern replacement clutch disk ?
  • Do you have any info on a possible modern replacement for the throw-out bearing ?
The throw-out bearing assembly is made up of both the bearing and the backing plate.  I'm looking for a close match for the bearing.  The backing plate could be remanufactured to accept a slightly different ID on the bearing.  I don't think an exact match is available.

Best Regards,  Chet...

Thanks, that was what I was expecting to see.  :)

I wonder if there is a modern replacement for the Borg and Beck 9A1.  I wonder what other cars used this setup in the 60's.

Thanks again.

I am very interested in what you are doing and if it is possible it would be nice to see both pressure plates.  If you could take a picture I would appreciate it. If you can't post it you could email it to me.

Thanks Chet

There is two style pressure plates for the Q,U, and 30u Thin arms and thick arms.  The PA has a 4th style.., cover three arms.  Look at the pictures on pages 80, 81 and 82 of the Master Parts List or post a picture of the pressure plate.  The clutch plate is the same for Q to PB.

BTW... "I can crank with the plugs out and with difficulty under compression. "  Sounds normal to me.

Russ,

I'm not sure about the interchangeability of the pressure plates.  28,29,30 to PA - Check the parts book. If it bolts up it might work but check it carefully prior to starting the motor.

As far as the Universal disks are concerned there are a number of threads on this topic.  Try a search in the General Discussion Category on "Universal Disks" or "Universal Joints"  BTW... You are correct, three disks in the back an two by the transmission.

Below is a link to a long thread on the topic of disks. From 2012

Rich (29PlyCoop) posted this in 2009

Here are the dimensions of the discs that fit my 29 Plymouth "U",(also used on 1928, 1929, 1930) hope this helps. The discs measure 6 in. in diameter, each of the 6 holes are 2 1/4 in. apart and the center hole is 2 1/8 in. in diameter and 5/16 in. thick. The 1929 Plymouth takes 5 of these discs per car on the Plymouths, 2 at the transmission and 3 at the rear-end. Good luck with your "Q"  HAPPY MOTORING!!!! Rich

If your car is jacked up on the frame with the rear axle hanging, you might see some severe pulling of the disks.  Just a thought.

The motor.  Why is the engine so tight.  Was it put back together with assembly grease.  Can you hand crank it ?  Just wondering

Tom, I am far from a guru more like a yahoo.

Actually I may disappoint you here.  I have used a spring in the past only to find it missing when in the clutch area again.  After my clutch explosion caused by centrifugal force moving the clutch arms outward without a throw out bearing to stop them, I decided that I would ensure and equal adjustment of the arms and forget the spring.  I am not recommending anything just stating what I did and will live with the consequences.  Yes the spring helps move the bearing away from the arms but I think the arms will find the bearing anyway.  My 2.5 cents.

I asked this in January of 2019 see link below

I haven't found a direct replacement.  Might have to machine a slightly modified backing plate to accommodate a modern bearing. With a slightly larger bearing ID.

If you come up with anything please give me a shout.

Russ I didn't post pictures after the muffler Tom did.  Mine are different than original and installed by a muffler shop years ago. Everything from my muffler to the engine was there when I acquired the car back in 2006.  Everything after the muffler is fabricated.

The pictures I post were what I found on my car. I don't know if there were there originally but they appear to be period.

I hope this helps.
