Quote from: Touring29 on June 18, 2022, 06:38:50 PMI am going to find another solution and it won't involve any discs made like his!
These look like they might be better. I also may just have a regular driveshaft built with a slip joint.

Have you decided on a solution yet?  Just curious.

General Discussion / Nice Day for a Drive
June 20, 2022, 07:53:55 PM
Before I took the car out, I checked the universal disks.  They looked the same as the day I first installed them in 2007.  Drove about 30 miles round trip to a park near my house.  Beautiful sunny day with temps in the high 70's.  I have driven 260 miles since I did anything to the Vaccuum fuel pump.  So, I guess that's working properly.

The car looks great but rides like a 93-year-old car.  Likes 35mph but on one lane roads drivers get impatient so I pull off where I can, to ease their stress.  I can't seem to find the right light to photograph this car because there are always reflections in either the glass or paint.  The picture below is the best of the lot.

Rapid CNC appears to have the correct disks.  You should only need 5 disks, 2 at the transmission and 3 at the rear axle.

BTW if you go the new driveshaft route, please keep this site informed on the solution and cost.

Tks, Chet,,,

I believe in another post you mentioned that these disks were a different thickness then the originals which caused you to use 3 at the transmission.  There should be 5 disks, 2 at the transmission and 3 at the drive axle.  Did you have 3 and 3 which might have been to tight to allow for the necessary flexing of the disks.

This issue is very dangerous.  If she was driving at 35mph there could have been greater damage if the drive shaft broke loose.

I wouldn't use any replacements he sends.  Find a new supplier with the correct disks.  I'll also check around.

Quote from: Touring29 on June 04, 2022, 11:45:04 PMWe have the 29 touring back together and drove it around town the last few days. I don't think I am brave enough to go out of town in it yet. Your car is a head turner! I hope you didn't cause any wrecks from people looking when they should be driving.
That's the wrong picture. I am working on a thread on the clutch install but I am not very good at this forum stuff. Oh well

It's always great to be able to post a successful drive.  I am still building confidence after a 4 year restoration.  From your picture you have the newer style pressure plate assembly.  Any other pictures of your drivetrain would be appreciated.  It's always interesting to see the minor differences in solutions to this area.

Cheers Chet...

Great job. The weather here is beautiful for driving but I'm in NYC and my car is back in DE. Hopefully be out again soon. Glad you had a nice drive with your daughter.  That's the best.

Cheers Chet

Tom,

I ordered the bearing from Amazon I'll get it next Thursday.  I currently don't need it but would like to have a good spare ready for action.  I have searched for an exact match to no avail but the SKF N1136 is the closest yet.  OD and thickness are the same Just the ID is different by 0.045".  I can have the holder machined to accept the bearing.

Once I get it, I can take the holder and the bearing to the machine shop to be fitted.  I remember someone else doing something similar but don't remember who.  Maybe Crazzydave.

I'm glad you're making progress.  If I recall from a past conversation, there were two different ring gears depending on which starter you have.

Tom,

The bearing number seems to be the closest modern bearing that will work.  The holder for the 29U is just about 0.045" to large for the N1136 but can be ground down to 1.750".

Please review the pictures:

I ordered a bearing to check out this theory.

Hi Ted, Nice hearing from you. When you are finished with the Dodge truck shoot us a picture,

Hi Frank, Oh well, life has a way of getting in the way sometimes, hopefully things will calm down for you.  After all, just to many things to get after in the spring.  I'll have to drag out the GPS and check the speedometer after 93 years maybe not so accurate anymore.

Tom, I wish you good luck with the rod babbitt.  :(

Quote from: Russ T. Fender on May 23, 2022, 05:44:19 PMThirty five is a comfortable speed but over that the vibration from those fiber disc universal joints gets annoying.  I have driven a friends Plymouth that was retrofitted with modern universal joints and his car was comfortable at 45 and could easily run at 50.    I actually had mine up to 55 once (when I was a stupid kid of 18) just to see if it would do it.  I have no doubt that with a fresh engine these Plymouths are capable of the 70 mph they were supposed to be able to achieve, not that I would ever attempt that. I rarely go over 30 in any of my cars and try to pick my routes accordingly.  It's not always easy but worth the effort.  Life in the slow lane is good!

10-4 The 29 is happiest at 35mph.  My 48 I drive at 50/55.  Getting rid of the drive shaft disks for a car that is driven would be a great idea.  I get bored sitting around car shows after about 2 hours.  I have thought about doing that retrofit but for now we will stay stock.  I would like to try a POC National and see how it does.  Then after that who knows.
