General Discussion / 29U - King Pins
November 10, 2020, 11:08:23 AM
It appears that the knock in my passenger side front wheel is related to the bottom bushing of the king pin.  There is a good amount of play and I can physically move the wheel back & forth and create the knock.  I guess cleaning off the protective years of grease and grime helped bring out the problem.  So I guess I will need to replace the king pin set and while I'm at it, replace the inner and outer wheel bearings. Oh yes probably should install the new brake pads I have for the front.  I guess when I was in this area I should have been more aggressive with repair.  Well I have all winter to find the parts and do the work.

Unfortunately I have never replaced king pins before and could use some advise.  I don't think it's difficult but I don't have any experience.

To remove the Pivot Pin lock pin, Does it just hammer out or is there a set screw.
Also which direction, see picture below:

Any words of wisdom from them that have been there and done that, would be appreciated, Chet...

Nice job John, did you run across any revenuers.  I hear moonshine may have traveled those same back roads.   I was able to do another 20 miles yesterday, one day at a time until I have confidence again in this old car.  It's really the vacuum fuel pump that I worry about.  Murphy's Law states "Whatever will go wrong, will.., and usually at the worst possible time".   So far, so good that's what worries me.

I liked your pictures.  I really enjoy the countryside and the look on people's faces when you fly by at 30mph.  My grandson refers to the 29 as Pop pop's Jeep.

It sounds like things are working OK. I just need to build confidence in the car.  Next time out will venture a little further.  That is after I clamp down on some serious rattles.

Thanks for the comments, Chet.

The wife & I went out for a drive in the 29 this morning.  Drove 20 miles around the neighborhood.  The car & I are getting use to each other again.  I am learning to drive straight cut gears all over again and it's not always pretty.  Plenty of rattles and groans but for the most part the car ran well.  The motor ran very cool and oil pressure was 20-25 at idle and 40psi at run.  The car still likes 30/35 mph to cruise the back country roads.  Lots of vibrations I need to investigate.  The worst seems to be the gravel pan on the drivers side.  I will install the correct running boards over the winter so that should eliminate the vibrations from the side kick panels and my home made running boards.  Didn't use any side mount hardware because I knew I would be replacing them.  I would like to get 100+ miles on the car before the first snow.  Total to date is 42.4.

Not going far until I have confidence in the vacuum fuel pump.  It over filled after 5 hours of idle run.  Apparently driving uses more gas than sitting idle and running on the driveway.   This makes sense so I hope no problems arise with the vacuum pump.  So far so good and the increase in gas usage while driving is a good sign that this should work out fine.  Fingers crossed.

Since we were talking about linseed oil here is an interesting link about linseed oil from the Natural Handyman.

Linseed Oil - Its Uses and Limitations

Ted,

I may take the wheels off over the winter to paint them.  If I do I will keep your suggestion in mind.  Although it might be too cold to do mid winter maybe in the spring.

Russ, thanks for the info, I couldn't budge any of the spokes so I think a little TLC will do the trick.  The car has been sitting for the last 4 years in a cool and dry environment.  A little moisture seemed to do the trick.

Same idea here........................   https://www.smokstak.com/forum/threads/linseed-oil-for-wagon.119411/

Ski, I found the thread on restoring old carriages very interesting.  I am going to poke around this a little to figure out what is the best long term solution.  Whatever I do right or wrong I'll let you guys know.

Tks,  Chet...

General Discussion / Wheel Maintenance

I was having problems with front wheel knock so I jacked up the front end and checked the wheels.  I couldn't find any loose wood spokes but they certainly looked dry.  After greasing the steering components again I socked the wood spokes the best I could with a spray bottle, both front and back. I let them dry turning the wheels from time to time to allow the water to pernitrate around the spoke and rim.  I took the car out today for a short drive and my knocking sound was gone.  I spoke with a friend and he said that I should put one coat of a 50% mixture of boiled linseed oil and turpentine to swell the wood.  Has anybody heard of this maintenance tip. ??  I have in the past sprayed the wheels during hot dry summer conditions but have not heard of using boiled linseed oil.  I guess the assumption is that the oil doesn't dry up as quickly as water.

Thanks Russ, that's good advise.  I'm going to troubleshoot this eventually but right now I'm just a little burnt out. Need to find some enthusiasm.

Took the car out again this morning and I still have a knock in the front wheels.  I can't tell which wheel is making the noise.  Today it seemed to switch sides.  I guess I will have to dig a little deeper into this.  The good news is that the motor seems to pull much stronger than before the rebuild.  Maybe get this wheel knock resolved and try a little more acceleration.

I would think the king pins would knock on a turn not while on a straight road.  The noise seems to increase & decrease with change in speed.  Maybe a wheel hub nut is hitting something in the brake area.  ??

Tom,

At the DMV inspection garage there are 4 sensors built into the floor.  You drive in and when the inspector signals you to stop you hit the brakes.  A computer analyzes the pressure applied by all wheels.  I am not sure what the range of accuracy is but if braking is uneven or out of spec you fail.

In Virginia inspections are done at your local gas station that has a certified state inspection agent.  He usually visually inspects the brakes.  Delaware is a small state and I believe there are only 4 locations where you can get an inspection done.  It is a drive through inspection process.  State inspections are every two years.  If you buy a new vehicle I believe the first inspection is after 5 years, emissions and safety.  Its all very humane.  Not like NYC.   :-\  Although I haven't had to deal with the NY DMV in more than 25 years, so maybe things are better these days.

We loaded up the 29 and set out for the DMV inspection station in Georgetown.

We off loaded the car and drove over to the inspection line.  I was frantic about the paint color change, should have brought the painting receipt.  I worried about pretty much everything you can think of until we pulled into the inspection bay.  First stop on the brake machine and passed.  Then all the inspectors had to come by to check her out.  Mostly concerned with three basic things.  Lights, windshield wiper, and vin number.   We passed with flying colors, no problems.

After we got home we started out on a test drive but had to turn around because of a scraping sound coming from the front passenger side wheel.  Quick check found a loose wheel bearing probably needs replacement over the winter but I tightened it up and we will try again tomorrow.

I guess we are back into maintenance mode.   Chet...

My thanks to everyone's comments and suggestions which helped shape the final outcome of my project.  Now I just need to get to the DMV for a one time inspection to get recertified to drive on state roads.  I don't foresee any issues.
