Exterior Body Work - Continued.

Because of poor weather the work has been slow.  I have converted over my wood shop to allow for the removal, repair, and prep of the fenders.   As mentioned earlier the fenders and other parts will be painted separately from the body.

The passenger side fender is coming along nicely.  The first sanding with primer filler is to expose blemishes that need some minor attention.

What is the obvious second step is to remove the hood hardware and attend to the flat metal.  It appears that the previous owner tried to repair the area by applying fiberglass.

I will have to remove and repair this area.  Much easier to do off the car and with the hardware removed.

I removed all the hardware and was able to scrape off the fiberglass and sand down to the metal.   I used body filler to cover up blemishes and pot marks from years of rust.

Most of this work was hand and block sanding.  Unable to use power tools on this small flat surface.  I primed the area with a coat of primer filler and will repair any noticeable blemishes then hand sand with 250 grit sand paper.

I also worked on the only main body hole which is on the passenger side front.  I tack welded some base metal which I attached with a screw and some pop rivets.

The light spray of primer reveals the need to blend the repaired area with the existing bodyline.  Though not bad for the first try.  A little grinding and additional filler will do the trick.  I'm glad this is the only serious body repair I have to deal with.

I ran the motor for about 45 minutes in the hot sun.  With 6 hours of runtime logged thus far the motor ran quiet and cool with outstanding vacuum and super clean exhaust.

Once the fender is completed I will coat it with black undercoat.
