My 1929 Plymouth Model U

Chet's Old Plymouths

          Current Work

Backseat area odds & ends

Before installing the front seat I need to install the rear rug, foot rest, and rear door sills.

The old door sills were in very poor shape.  I was able to purchase these from a gentlemen that was parting out a 29 Sedan.  They were ugly when I started but cleaned up to usable shape.  I straightened them in my bench press and cleaned them up with my wire wheeled grinder.  Once in decent shape I sanded them with 220 grit and painted with chrome paint.  They should work just fine and the battle scars add character to the old car.   I believe the mixture of old and new really lends character to the restoration.   I was only able to save the passenger side front sill so I will have to fabricate something until an original part presents itself.

My foot rest was original to my car and one side hinge was frozen in place.  After removing the one inch diameter, 33 inch long foot rail tube.  I drilled out the hinge rivet,  separated the pieces, and you guessed it.  I cleaned up the metal and painted the cast iron rail guides.
I used a new one inch diameter steel tube for the foot rest.   This tube is a much heavier gauge than the original foot rail and should provide the same function without bending.   I reassembled the foot rest and painted the assembly.

While the paint was drying, I installed the rear door sill plates and made a template for the rear rug.   I will use this template to make a precise match for the rear carpet.

Making the template is time consuming but will make installing the new carpet much easier and more exact.

I used the template pictured above to layout the rug material.   In order to draw a chalk cut line, I placed the finish side down and laid the template face down on top of the rug material.  Now I could mark the material on the side that will face the floor.

My wife did a perfect job of cutting out the rug material.   No place for a mistake because I only ordered enough to do this once.

We installed the rug and located the holes for the foot rail and installed the rail.  Doing this kept the rug in the correct position while we used a sparing amount of glue to ensure that the rug stays where it is supposed to be.

We cut and glued on the two and three quarter inch piece of rug covering the wood from the floor to the seat bottom.  Gluing this on after the floor rug made for a really tight seam between the two rug sections.  The pictures below are the results of out work.

Now we move on to the front seat area.
